Day 58: 01/17/2022
It’s morning again and we’re ready to go back to the park for some hiking! We packed a nice cold meat sandwich picnic for our hike and drove in. Today wasn’t quite as warm or sunny as yesterday, but was still a gorgeous day in the low 50s. We got back on the same trail but were determined to get all the way to Wapama Falls! The trail was fairly busy today but still had plenty of area to ourselves. The trails pass a couple other waterfalls rushing down the mountainside. The rocky path weaves along the cliff-line of the reservoir and after 3 miles, we made it to Wapama Falls!
There were a couple other groups of people there also enjoying picnics. We searched for a good spot to get off the trail and sit down to eat. We found a fantastic spot towards the end of the footbridge and climbed down some rock and scaled our way out to a very large boulder with a flat rock surface on the back side. With an amazing unobstructed view of the reservoir, this definitely goes down as one of our best picnics of all time! We silenced our hunger with good food and the sounds of the roaring waterfall crashing through many levels of rock. After some time to eat and admire the views, we packed up and trekked three miles back towards the trailhead, through the tunnel and over the dam. One last view of the reservoir and the distance beyond the water and the valley below the dam. We said our goodbyes to Hetch Hetchy and made our way back to the camper.
We are incredibly grateful for the past days at Yosemite! We’re disappointed to have missed Tioga Road and the many miles of Yosemite that were closed due to its regular winter closure. However, our trip to the park was spectacular and proves that even winter is a great time to visit this magnificent park. We will definitely be back to explore many more wonders of the park.
