Day 61: 01/20/2022
We officially made it into Death Valley National Park this morning, hence what the title is describing. Thankfully, it’s the winter season and weather in the valley is nearly perfect! Plenty of sun and a warm 75 outside (a whole 70 degrees warmer than back home in Iowa City). We got two nights at the Texas Spring campground in Furnace Creek. We’ve got about as many neighbors as we’ve had all trip.
This afternoon we ventured up to Dante’s View which presented great views of the valley 5,000 feet below. The next stop was an impromptu hiking trek into Golden Canyon which had some really nice slot canyons to climb through. This trail turned out to be quite fun and also a great spot for photos with the afternoon sun. Our final destination before returning to camp was Badwater Basin. At 280 feet below sea level, the basin is the lowest point in the United States. The salt flats at the bottom were also worth the visit.
This evening we realized how much weather can determine how much we like a place. A sweatshirt was plenty to keep comfy in the light breeze as we enjoyed a little fire to finish out the night.
